Why do tech jobs pay so much?

Tech jobs have become known for commanding high pay, thanks to an exploding need for people to build and manage the tech solutions we rely on every day, and a shortage of workers with the right emerging skillsets to keep pace.

Here’s how big tech companies like Google and Facebook set salaries for software engineers

Spencer Platt is a Getty Images contributor. When Zuhayeer Musa and Zaheer Mohiuddin, two new college graduates and friends, set out to get into the software sector, they discovered that everything they saw on the internet concerning engineering employment lacked the crucial information they required: What is the compensation for these positions? Software engineers earning six-figure incomes right out of college, before taking into account equity incentives, are common. Some coders earn millions of dollars every year, depending on their level of experience.

Apple has five tiers of engineers, starting with ICT2 and progressing to ICT6.

A person’s salary increases in direct proportion to his or her degree of experience, and Musa and Mohiuddin soon recognized that their colleagues had a lot of questions about how the levels operated.

Is it reasonable for someone to get more money if they are promoted to ICT3 at Apple?

The ability to recognize levels is beneficial when moving from Facebook to Microsoft to Amazon to Google.

As a result, the two friends created a website to crowdsource Silicon Valley wage data from employees at large technology businesses, which quickly gained popularity.

I was going through a work transition myself; I had only two years of experience but had been promoted; I was feeling a little lost “Mohiuddin went on to say that he’s seen friends be ripped over when they switch firms, which he believes is true.

Salaries start over $150,000

‘Hacker Way’ is the name of a street sign that can be seen in the parking lot of the Facebook offices in Menlo Park, California. Image courtesy of Robyn Beck | AFP | Getty Images According to the crowdsourced data on, software engineers at businesses such as Google, Facebook, Amazon, Apple, and Microsoft are paid extraordinarily well compared to their peers. According to, a Level 3 at Google, which is equivalent to an entry-level engineer who has presumably just graduated from college, should earn $189,000 in total pay, which includes around $124,000 in salary and $43,000 in stock compensation.

According to the website’s owners, compensation increases according to level advancement and can potentially accelerate in an exponential form.

In his book on technical recruitment, Osman Ahmed Osman, a former Quora hiring manager who is currently authoring a book on technical recruiting, says that while every firm has its own method, “a handful of organizations have converged on basically the same approach where there would be roughly six stages.” At each organization, each level has a somewhat different job title, although they are all closely related to one another.

According to him, “Google and Facebook are instances of firms where things are very comparable.” The names of the firms are a little different from one another.

After all, the persons who are most likely to submit their compensation details are those who make a lot of money, thus there is a danger that the data will be incorrect.

However, the founders of stand by the data they’ve gathered and the methods they’ve used to remove outliers and other unreliable data points.

People can also delve down into each estimate to discover additional data points, such as the submitter’s specialty and location, according to the website, which they say is a plus.

A powerful negotiation tool

Engineers who have reached a certain level in a large corporation sometimes wonder what level they would be at a smaller corporation — and whether it would entail a salary raise. In most firms, Osman explained, pay bands are used to specify that if you are a level three employee, your wage range has two ends: one at the low end and one at the high end. The problem is that firms aren’t always forthcoming with information on what the salary range is for any specific position, making negotiating for more money even more difficult.

  • According to Musa, “if you’re a software developer, you’re most likely making six figures.” “Senior engineers, on the other hand, are paid outrageous salaries in the millions.
  • If you look at Glassdoor or other salary sites, there is no link between level and pay “He went on to say more.
  • That’s what I was thinking as well, “Mohiuddin shared his thoughts.
  • People with a few years of expertise are earning several hundred thousand dollars, according to some estimates.” According to Musa, one disadvantage of the leveling system is that it might foster a “up-or-out” culture based on the system’s levels.
  • As a candidate, “it’s quite difficult for you to traverse the system, which has ramifications for fairness and diversity,” Osman explained.
  • This approach may also put upward pressure on salaries throughout Silicon Valley, which is fantastic for technical staff in high demand, but can result in a high cost of living that makes it difficult for those working in less lucrative businesses to reside in the region.
  • “Uber or Slacks will have to raise their base pay, and once Uber and Slacks start raising their base salaries, the Series B and Series C firms will have to raise their base salaries as well,” Taggar explained further.
  • According to Taggar, “the growing remuneration of Bay Area software professionals, the cause of which is Google and Facebook.” There is a weakness in the levels if there is one.
  • “When you get into the fourth or fifth year of employment, the people who are more naturally competent have the chance to demonstrate exactly how much more productive they are,” Taggar explained, adding it is at this point that salary may skyrocket.
  • For example, while most Google employees realistically believe that Level 7 is the most they can reasonably go in their careers, some really talented software developers can achieve even higher levels.
  • There are fewer individuals at higher levels of the ladder since it is shaped like a pyramid, according to Osman.

“If we use the general levels, the vast majority of engineers fall between L3 and L5, on average. Most organizations treat staff level as a career level, and you can stay at that level for the remainder of your working life “Mohiuddin shared his thoughts.

Not invented here

Zuhayeer Musa and Zaheer Mohiuddin are the co-founders of Zuhayeer Musa and Zaheer Mohiuddin are two of the most talented individuals in the world. Osman points out that, despite the fact that Silicon Valley corporations frequently claim to have originated the technical ladder, it has really been in use at numerous organizations for more than seven decades. He claims that the system’s beginnings can be traced back to DuPont in the post-World War II era, and that it was created to provide outstanding technical employees with the opportunity to grow and improve in their careers without having to enter management and climb the corporate ladder.

  1. The desire to continue conducting technical work is expressed by the group.
  2. The fyi founders are expanding and gathering data from a variety of areas right now, and they’ve discovered that many of those professions have their own ladders as well.
  3. “In investment banking, the emphasis is on the individual level.
  4. It’s pretty comparable in terms of analyst, associate, VP, and MD — it’s more conventional and well-known at Goldman, Morgan Stanley, and Citi.

Does a software engineer at Google make $3 million a year?

Photograph by Siphotography / Getty Images Business Insider published a story last week about a Google engineer who “turned down” a $500,000 salary offer from a startup since he was already earning $3 million a year in pay and stock awards at Google. Because the story comes from an anonymous source, it’s impossible to determine whether or not it’s true. However, because I’m usually interested in engineers who make a lot of money, this one caught my eye and made me wonder: is it fair to expect a Google engineer to earn that much money?

Former Wall Street programmer Sergey Aleynikov was famously paid a million dollars as a genuine in-the-weeds code-writing developer, but earning a million dollars as a programmer is extremely uncommon, especially in the financial industry.

Clearly, any Google engineer earning $3 million per year is receiving the majority of his or her compensation in the form of bonuses and/or stock.

As reported by Glassdoor, a website that collects self-reported wage data from employees, the following is a breakdown of pay for Google software engineers (based on 4,440 responses).

  • Average total compensation: $144,652 (ranging from $78,000 to $550,000)
  • Average salary: $118,958 (ranging from $78,000 to $215,000)
  • Average cash bonus: $20,946 (ranging from $20 to $100,000)
  • Average stock bonus: $30,933 (ranging from $125 to $200,000)
  • Average total compensation: $144,652 (ranging from $78,000 to $550,000)
  • Average total compensation: $144,652 (

Based on the assumption that these figures are accurate and representative of Google engineers in general (a significant leap of faith, to be sure, but it’s the best data I could find), the average lower-level software engineer at Google earns $145,000 per year, which includes stock options and bonus payments. The top-end package included a $550,000 salary, a $100,000 cash bonus, and $200,000 in stock, for a total annual pay of around $850,000. Google senior software engineers’ pay information is also available on Glassdoor (246 respondents).

  • Average total compensation: $210,865 (with a range of $80,000 to $630,000)
  • Average salary: $149,740 (with a range of $80,000 to $222,000)
  • Average bonus: $19,740 (with a range of $80,000 to $222,000)
  • Average cash bonus: $32,008 (ranging from $25 to $80,000)
  • Average stock bonus: $49,315 (ranging from $50 to $300,000)
  • Average stock bonus: $49,315 (ranging from $50 to $300,000).

Senior software engineers at Google earn an average total income of $210,000 per year, according to Glassdoor. At the top end, they earn $630,000 per year, plus an additional $80,000 in cash bonuses and $300,000 in stock awards, for a total of slightly over $1 million per year. Given all of this, $3 million per year represents around three times the highest known yearly remuneration for a Google engineer. So, does this indicate that the BI report wasn’t accurate and that no engineers at Google make that much money in the real world?

It is possible that the individual in the article is a true engineering executive or a ” 10X engineer ” (or, at the very least, a 3X engineer); that is, someone who possesses outstanding abilities, skills, and qualifications and who basically performs the job of ten engineers in a single day.

What should you take away from all of this? The salaries of Google employees are competitive; yet, $3 million per year is a substantial sum of money even for Google workers. 2014 IDG Communications, Inc. Copyright & Intellectual Property Rights

Companies such as Airbnb, Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Google (including its parent company), Microsoft (including its subsidiary Salesforce), Snap (which owns Snapchat), and Uber were studied. Engineering, design, and other professionals are rewarded in the competitive industry based on the information provided by US corporations in visa applications for foreign employees, according to the statistics.

Despite the epidemic, large US technology businesses have continued to expand at an outstanding rate, generate significant profits, and hire at an alarming rate. When the IT industry group CompTIA released its report in early July, it stated that the sector had achieved job growth in 10 of the previous 12 months – a remarkable achievement given the lockdowns that occurred last year. According to the report, technology companies hired more than 80,000 people in the United States during the first half of 2021.

Across the board, more than 300,000 open tech positions were advertised in June, with software and app developers, IT-support experts and project managers, systems engineers and architects, and systems analysts among the most in-demand professionals.

When companies employ foreign workers under the H1-B visa program, they are obligated to publish certain details, including salary (or, in some cases, compensation ranges), which provides insight into how much these computer titans are prepared to pay for top-tier talent.

Following your review of this industry data, you should consult Insider’s searchable database of over 250,000 salaries from more than 250 organizations, which will help you determine how much you should be paid.

Software Engineering Salaries at Google: A Guide

For many people, working for a technological company such as Google is a lifelong goal. It marks the peak of success for large technology corporations. As a result of the development of products such as the well-known Gmail, GSuite, as well as the Google Search engine, Google has become ubiquitous in our lives. It’s no surprise that the organization attracts so many software developers who want to work for them. That’s on top of a Google software engineer compensation that might run from six to seven figures per year.

Every job must be able to pay the bills, and some jobs are better at this than others.

However, the issue remains as to what kind of pay you might anticipate to receive from Google.

Throughout this tutorial, we’ll go through what software engineers at Google may expect to earn in terms of compensation. We’ll look at how much engineers make, what perks they receive, and how remuneration fluctuates depending on their degree of seniority in the company.

Google Engineer Levels

Google, like many other large technology companies, pays its employees according to a tier structure. Because huge corporations have a more hierarchical structure, they frequently employ this strategy. Having a compensation scale system in place also guarantees that everyone at similar levels within the organization gets a salary that is comparable to their colleagues. It’s crucial to grasp the Google software engineer levels in order to understand how much you can anticipate to earn as a software engineer.

  1. Principal Engineer (L8 | Director)

In other words, they prefer that their new colleagues think outside the box and beyond their particular sector in order to come up with a diverse variety of answers to the problems they are presented with.
